Celebrating 15 Years of JazzArts Charlotte: JazzArts Alumni Weekend
As we celebrate the 15th anniversary of JazzArts Charlotte, we look back on an inspiring journey of jazz education, live performances, and artist development. Since 2009, JazzArts Charlotte has grown into a thriving community, rooted in the belief that jazz is more than just music—it’s a medium for cultural connection, personal growth, and community building. This season, we’re proud to feature alumni who have been part of our story over the years, showcasing their talents in a special Alumni Show on November 22nd and 23rd. Join us as we honor these talented artists who are taking the jazz world by storm.
King Noli (Malcolm Charles)
Known as a true “musical magician,” King Noli has been captivating audiences since 2016 with his unforgettable melodies and genre-defying style. His dynamic career includes performances at iconic venues like Blue Note NYC and Babylon Istanbul, and collaborations with artists such as Hannibal Buress and Jennifer Holliday. Based in Charlotte, King Noli writes, sings, raps, and produces his own music, bringing a unique sound that’s sure to mesmerize.
Emanuel Wynter
Charlotte’s own Emanuel Wynter blends R&B and Rock with a soulful, high-energy stage presence that’s truly infectious. A classically trained violinist and talented songwriter, Emanuel takes influence from artists like Anthony Hamilton and Gary Clark Jr., bringing a rich and expressive sound that keeps audiences coming back. His recent live album, From Orbit, earned critical acclaim and a “Best in the Nest” nod, solidifying his place as a standout performer.
Lovell “Skip” Bradford Jr.
With roots in gospel and jazz, Lovell Bradford Jr. is a first-call bassist with a range that spans jazz, funk, Latin, and more. Raised in a musical family and trained by ear from a young age, he’s quickly become a mainstay in the Charlotte and Greensboro music scenes. Bradford’s talents have earned him accolades including recognition from the Jazz Education Network and a scholarship to the Miles Davis Jazz Studies program at UNCG.
Braxton Bateman
A talented multi-instrumentalist with deep roots in jazz, was born in Philadelphia and raised in Charlotte. He is the grandson of the legendary jazz drummer Edward Bateman Jr., who played with icons like Herbie Hancock and Chick Corea. Bateman’s early exposure to the vibrant neo-soul scene in Philadelphia, particularly at venues like the Clef Club of Jazz & Performing Arts, greatly influenced his musical journey. Initially drawn to the visual arts, Bateman’s trajectory changed dramatically after moving to Charlotte and enrolling at the Northwest School of the Arts. An accidental placement in band class introduced him to music in a transformative way, fostering an environment that encouraged artistic freedom and self-expression.
Sean Mason
A celebrated figure in jazz, Sean Mason has earned acclaim for his mastery of the piano and his remarkable skill as a composer. His debut album, The Southern Suite, showcases his ability to blend traditional jazz with modern influences, earning critical praise from NPR and Downbeat. With collaborations spanning genres—from Wynton Marsalis to Masego—and an impressive Broadway résumé, Sean’s artistry extends beyond the stage. He’s also a passionate educator, inspiring the next generation of jazz artists.
Chris Schiavoni
A recent graduate of the University of North Texas, Chris Schiavoni brings an innovative mix of jazz, progressive metal, and electronic influences to his saxophone, guitar, and music production work. Now based in Cramerton, Chris has become a rising force in the Charlotte jazz scene, captivating audiences with his original compositions and high-energy performances that showcase his unique musical style.
Elijah Freeman
Elijah Freeman, 24 is a tenor saxophone player based out of Charlotte, North Carolina. He has been honing his craft over the past 10 years with influences from many of the greats such as John Coltrane, Johnny Griffin, Dexter Gordon, Sonny Rollins, etc… He first played the saxophone at the age of 15 following an accident that rendered his right arm unable to move. In this time he then began dedicating his life to the music of jazz. Since then he has performed with many reputable members of the jazz community such as Ashlin Parker, John Schofield, Sean Jones, Jimmy Cobb, and many of the talented artists on the Charlotte music scene. He has recently formed his own quintet with fellow bandmate from the JazzArts Charlotte program Ariel Mejia. Together, they formed a group called the Blackhawk Quintet, which features the music post 1950s hard bop style with a fusion of their Latin American roots.
