Our JazzArts Summer Camp Clinician – Marcus Strickland!
The JazzArts Academy is thrilled to announce saxophonist Marcus Strickland as the 2024 Summer Music Camp special guest clinician! Strickland’s band and concept project, “Twi-Life” deals with the connection and intersection between jazz, soul, and hip hop. In addition to his own “Twi-Life,” trio and quartet, Strickland has played with Christian McBride, Dave Douglas, Jeff “Tain” Watts, Robert Glasper, and had a five-year stint with the drummer Roy Haynes. Strickland has been on two Grammy-nominated recordings (including Fountain of Youth – Roy Haynes & Keystone). In addition to his busy performance schedule, Strickland is an educator in the Frost School of Music at the University of Miami, where he serves as Associate Professor of Practice.
The JazzArts Summer Music Camp is an exciting one-week comprehensive music training program for students, grades 7-12, devoted to America’s original art form: JAZZ. The camp runs June 24-28 from 9:00-3:00pm and is presented at UNC Charlotte. Auditions for new students will take place on Saturday, June 22. Students will be immersed in an intensive jazz curriculum and will interact and play with other motivated young musicians from across the Charlotte region. Curriculum includes small combo performance, jazz improvisation, jazz history and listening, jazz theory (basic to advanced), master class instruction on bass, drums, guitar, piano, saxophone (all woodwinds), trombone and trumpet, and student jam sessions. All instruments are welcome, including vocals. There will be a culminating community concert performance on Friday evening, the last day of camp.
