CHARLOTTE, N.C. – May 9 2022 – World-renowned saxophonist and jazz educator Roxy Coss is this year’s special guest, leading the clinic for this year’s annual JazzArts Summer Music Camp presented at UNC Charlotte, June 20-24, with JazzArts Charlotte. This exciting one-week camp is a comprehensive jazz music training program for students grades 7 – 12 held from 9:00AM – 3:00PM each day at UNC Charlotte.

Students will be immersed in an intensive jazz curriculum and have the opportunity to interact and play with other motivated young musicians from the Charlotte area. Jazz is a unique form of music that goes beyond improving instrument skills, to understanding chordal harmonies, experiencing complex jazz rhythms, and improvisation and composition. “Most of all, students consistently gain a level of confidence, leadership, and teamwork that help them mature in every aspect,” says Lonnie Davis, CEO and President of JazzArts Charlotte.

This summer, award-winning jazz musician and composer Roxy Coss, a visionary, 20-year jazz educator veteran, and national powerhouse musician, lends her expertise to Charlotte at JazzArts Summer Camp.

The 2022 JazzArts Summer Music Camp is excited to be hosted by UNC Charlotte’s Department of Music, and located on the UNC Charlotte Main Campus and led by leading jazz educators from around the region.

As a nonprofit committed to ensuring access to all, JazzArts Charlotte offers financial aid scholarships on a need-based sliding scale. (Financial aid deadline June 1.)

About Roxy Coss

Musician, Composer, Bandleader, Recording Artist, Educator and Activist Roxy Coss has become one of the most unique and innovative Saxophonists on the scene. DownBeat Critics’ Poll listed her as a “Rising Star” on Soprano Saxophone seven years in a row. Roxy is a fixture on the New York jazz scene, one of the world’s top Jazz Saxophonists and one of few female band leaders in the jazz field. She has five recordings as band leader, most recently “Quintet” released in 2019.

As an educator, Roxy has 20 years of experience with students of all ages. In addition to private instruction, she has led Masterclasses around the country, including Berklee College of Music, Western Michigan University, Jazz at Lincoln Center, and Seattle’s JazzEd. She regularly performs with teaching programs such as Jazz For Young People at JALC. She has also held a variety of esteemed instructor positions from Director of Jazz Ensembles at Beacon High School in NYC, and New York Summer Music Festival, to Jazz Faculty at The Juilliard School, The New School, and the Borough of Manhattan Community College (a CUNY School). Roxy has appeared as a guest teacher at Queens College, Seattle JazzEd’s “Girls Jazz Sleepover”, and at The Jazz Academy of Music.

Roxy is currently on the Board of Directors of Jazz Education Network (JEN) and was the Founder of Women In Jazz Organization, a collective of over 300 professional jazz musicians with a mission to level the playing field for women in jazz, create a support system and platform for education.
