After much-acclaim and sold-out performances, Charlotte’s Jazz Arts Initiative’s (JAI) monthly series—The Jazz Room @ The Stage Door Theater – kicks off season 9 on April 14 & 15 with the Sasha Masakowski singing sounds of Brazil with a tribute to the king of bossa nova, Antônio Carlos Jobim .

The Stage Door Theater is part of Blumenthal Performing Arts Center, at the corner of 5th and College in Uptown Charlotte. Brazilian songwriter, composer, arranger, singer, and pianist/guitarist Antônio "Tom" Carlos Jobim is considered to be one of the most important songwriters of the 20th century, sometimes referred to as the George Gershwin of Brazil.

A key event in making Jobim's music known in the English speaking world was his collaboration with the American jazz saxophonist Stan Getz and João Gilberto, which resulted in “Getz/Gilberto” (1963) The release of Getz/Gilberto created a bossa nova craze in the United States, and subsequently internationally. Jobim is best known for songs such as “The Girl from Impanema”, “Wave”, “Triste” and “A Felicidade”.

Shows take place on the third Friday (6:00pm & 8:15pm) and Saturday (7:00pm & 9:15pm) of each month and feature two sets as the Charlotte region’s most gifted musicians recreate the music of jazz masters like Miles Davis, Dave Brubeck and Billie Holiday. The Jazz Room @ The Stage Door Theater provides a casual and intimate setting with tables and a full bar, reminiscent of the classic jazz rooms of yesteryear.
