About Veronica Leahy
I started playing the piano when I was 3 years old. I loved to tinker around with it, so I started taking private lessons shortly thereafter. I participated in many competitions for concertos and such. As soon as I started playing, I started composing. I started out writing simple melodies on the piano that later evolved into pieces for band, orchestra, and jazz ensembles.
I decided I wanted to play the saxophone after hearing recordings of Joshua Redman play. I rented an alto saxophone when I was in the 4th grade, and I immediately started practicing. I played mostly classical saxophone until I decided I wanted to start jazz seriously in the 7th grade. I joined JAI the next year, and I've been enjoying it ever since! I also started the flute and clarinet in 8th grade.
What do you like about Jazz?
I have a deep passion for all music, but jazz music particularly strikes me. I like how I can express myself in jazz; each tune I play is a true reflection of myself - my mood, my enthusiasm, and my favorite players.Since there is the improvisation aspect in jazz, it really does represent a piece of me unlike any other genre. Also, jazz is very American and unique.
I want to be a professional musician for sure. Being a jazz saxophonist in New York is what I'm aspiring for now, but I will always write music, play piano, flute and clarinet. I also want to play all types of music, but jazz mainly.
No matter what, though, I want to spread music to others and keep jazz going!
